Ded Moroz (St Nicholas) visited homes with children on Christmas Eve, and like other St. Nicholas of other European countries, traveled with a helper, who in this case was a devil-like boy carrying a basket of coal and switches to threaten the boys & girls.The historical source for this figurine was an antique glass painting in reverse, an old Ukrainian folk art.
