1837 West Point St. Nicholas - Memories of Santa

$18.99

America – Circa 1837

This Santa was inspired by Robert Weir’s painting of St. Nicholas in the year 1837. The Painting was a significant contribution in the history of St. Nicholas to the evolution of the Santa in America today. The Dutch clay pipe in his hood and Dutch boots and knickers indicate the significance of the Dutch Knickerbockers in early New York. The military stripe on his coat and tan color are reminders of Weir’s profession as a drawing instructor at West Point Military Academy.

Finally, “the finger to his nose” was apparently borrowed from Clement Moore’s famous poem The Night Before Christmas, just 17 years earlier.
