In the beginning of the nineteenth century St. Nicholas became a well known figure in New York City. He was officially recognized by the New York Historical Society at the first annual Celebration Festival of St Nicholas held on December 10, 1810. This St. Nicholas was inspired by a wood engraving by Alexander Anderson, who was commissioned to carve the St Nicholas, for the occasion.
